Toy Dogs

I was recently living my life (no big, I do it all the time) and I saw somebody carrying their dog around and this thought occurred to me: if you need to carry your dog around, you need a new dog. There is a reason people “walk the dog” and that is that all dogs need to walk around and relieve themselves at some point in time and if your dog is so small that you can carry it and it can’t keep up with you when you’re walking about, your dog is too weak. It’s called natural selection, let life run its course. That said, I think they’re really cute (sometimes). I just wouldn’t want to own one.

  1. Coming from someone who recently obtained a "toy dog" (he's just about 8 lbs which officially puts him in that classification, although, I'm not fond of the terminology), I can tell you that at least 90% of the times you see someone carrying a dog, it's not a matter of the dog unable to walk, it's a matter of the owner not allowing it to. As you may have heard, we got a bit of snow here in the Chicago area and Dudley (my mini dachshund) is seriously shorter than the snow we have. When we take him on walks, it must be like one of those European garden mazes for him. I'm not saying I've never picked him up and then taken a steps to constitute "carrying" him, but it wasn't for lack of ability. In fact, with dachshunds in particular, they need lots of exercise so they don't get fat. Because when they get fat, their chubby stomach puts too much weight on their spine and they can end up with those infamous back problems they are known for. Anyway, what I'm trying o say is, when I see a model carrying a chihuahua down Hollywood Blvd, I don't think "man, what a waste of a species, that little free-loader is using up resources that should be reserved able-bodied animals!" I think, "that woman is neglecting that dog."
